Cadence™ Self-Breathing Technology

Cadence Self-Breathing Technology offers a “minimally invasive” approach to self-breathing trials.  It is designed for prolonged mechanical ventilator (PMV) patients who have undergone a tracheostomy and who are candidates for self-breathing trials.  Patients often experience decreased hypoxemia and increased exercise capacity.

In contrast to other self-breathing methods, the Cadence Self-Breathing System provides oxygen-enriched, heated and humidified gas directly to the patient’s lungs through the proprietary Cadence™ Transtracheal Catheter.  Because deflation of the tracheostomy tube’s cuff is required, three notable benefits may be realized:

  1. Breathing pattern synchrony issues inherent with mechanical ventilation are eliminated;
  2. The patient experiences minimal work of breathing because the resistance created by the inner lumen of a cuffed tracheotomy tube is removed;
  3. A more normal breathing situation is restored because the patient is able to inhale and exhale through the upper airway.  This may return the abilities for the patient to eat, drink fluids and speak, and increase exercise capacity.
